Rule applied · Companies House

A company declares at least one and at most four SIC codes at registration; each code must be in this condensed list, and codes can be changed later with a confirmation statement.

At least one and at most four codes

If the company will carry out more than one activity, up to four codes can be declared.

Codes can be changed later

A change is declared with a confirmation statement. Every company files a confirmation statement at least once a year, and the SIC code appears in the additional information section of that statement; the statement can also be filed earlier.

Only codes in this condensed list

Companies House states that a filing that uses a code outside the list may be rejected. Companies House uses a condensed version of the full ONS classification. The condensing does not remove codes: every code at the most detailed level is in the list, while classes that have sub-divisions do not have a code of their own (for example 56100). Three Companies House codes are added to these: 74990, 98000 and 99999.

What n.e.c. means

“Not elsewhere classified”: the codes chosen when an activity does not fit a more specific code.

Official definitions and section names

Code definitions and section names are shown as Companies House publishes them. Official definitions are in English. A search looks for your words in the official definitions of all the codes in the list. Section names are the official section titles used by Companies House, and code definitions appear exactly as they do in the Companies House list.

UK SIC 2026 and this list

The SIC 2007 list is still the one used for company registration today. ONS presents UK SIC 2026 as the current classification for classifying businesses. Companies House states that a new code framework is under discussion with ONS but has not yet been agreed, and it still requires this SIC 2007 list for company registration today.

Outside the scope of the tool

It does not choose the code for you: determining the code that best describes your activity is up to you. The official definitions are in English.
