The cost of living, currency, minimum wage and job opportunities in Northern Cyprus, set out with official figures. A 2026 guide for those considering living in Cyprus and setting up a business.
The first questions of those considering living in Cyprus are similar: the currency, the level of rent, job opportunities and the conditions of work. This article deals with Northern Cyprus, officially the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and the figures are given as published by official bodies as of 9 October 2026. Where a figure has no official source, the name of the source is stated.
What is life like in Cyprus, and how does daily life work in Northern Cyprus?
In Northern Cyprus the official language is Turkish and the currency is the Turkish lira. Differences appear in the details of daily life. Traffic drives on the left, rents are set in foreign currency, and a permit is needed to work. These differences are dealt with in turn in the sections below.
The districts and cities of Northern Cyprus
Northern Cyprus consists of six districts: the capital Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta, Morphou, Iskele and Lefke. Public bodies and business life are concentrated in Nicosia. Kyrenia and Iskele are known for tourism and housing projects along the coast, and Famagusta for its port and university. The choice of where to live is mostly determined by the location of the workplace or school.
Transport and traffic in Northern Cyprus
Traffic in Northern Cyprus drives on the left, and vehicles have the steering wheel on the right. Because public transport between cities is limited, most residents use their own vehicle. When preparing a living budget for Cyprus, vehicle and fuel costs should be included from the start.
What is the currency of Northern Cyprus?
The official currency of Northern Cyprus is the Turkish lira. Salaries, bills, and supermarket and fuel prices are set in Turkish lira. In Northern Cyprus, holding foreign currency, contracting in foreign currency and transferring funds abroad are free; this area is regulated by the Law on Money and Foreign Exchange Affairs.
This freedom is reflected in daily life as well: it is usual in Northern Cyprus for rent and property listings to state prices in pounds sterling or euros. For people whose income is in Turkish lira, the rent budget changes with exchange rate movements; this is the first item to take into account before moving.
In which currency is a company account opened in Northern Cyprus?
A corporate account at a Northern Cyprus bank is opened in Turkish lira and in foreign currency. Turkish lira payments from Turkey can be accepted; foreign currency arriving from abroad reaches the account in Northern Cyprus through an intermediary bank in Turkey. The account opening process is explained stage by stage on the Northern Cyprus bank account page.

Setting up your own business in Cyprus
For those who wish to set up their own business in Cyprus, there are two separate structures. If sales are to be made to the Northern Cyprus domestic market, a local limited company is formed, and the company falls under the general tax rules of Northern Cyprus. Where customers are outside Northern Cyprus, a Free Port and Zone company comes into consideration; this company pays no corporate or income tax on activity directed outside Northern Cyprus.
A Northern Cyprus Free Port company is particularly suitable for the following activities:
- Software developers and freelancers who provide services to customers abroad.
- Transit trade and export activities in which goods are sent abroad from the Free Port.
- Businesses that need a Turkish lira account for the company.
If you plan to trade in goods and sell into the European Union, an EORI number also becomes relevant for customs procedures. For those looking for business ideas, our article on business ideas in Dubai offers examples from another country.
Is a permit needed to work in Northern Cyprus?
Yes. Citizens of other countries, Turkish citizens included, are treated as foreigners in Northern Cyprus and are obliged to obtain a work permit in order to work. The application is made by the employer. According to the procedure published by the Ministry, the process runs in the following order:
- Before the employee comes to Northern Cyprus, the employer obtains a preliminary permit from the Ministry.
- After the employee enters Northern Cyprus, the employer submits the work permit application within 15 days at the latest.
- Procedures are completed within 30 days at the latest; the permit is granted for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 1 year.
A work permit in Northern Cyprus is valid for a specific workplace and employer; it is not possible to work at another workplace with the same permit. All fees and expenses are borne by the employer; no deduction can be made from the employee's pay.
How is a work permit extended in Northern Cyprus?
An application to extend a work permit in Northern Cyprus can be made at most two months before the permit expires; it must be made within 90 days at the latest after the period has expired. For an extension, the person must not have stayed abroad for more than 135 days during the expired permit period. If work is not started or the employment contract ends, the permit becomes invalid and is cancelled by the Ministry.
Does forming a company in Northern Cyprus give a right of residence?
No. Owning a company in Northern Cyprus does not in itself confer a right of residence or work. A foreign shareholder who will reside in Northern Cyprus and manage the company must obtain a separate business establishment permit from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. Those who continue to live elsewhere should consider their tax liabilities in their country of residence.
Living in Northern Cyprus and forming a company in Northern Cyprus are separate decisions. Accounts with Stripe, PayPal, Payoneer, Shopify Payments, Amazon and Etsy cannot be opened in the name of a Northern Cyprus Free Port company; payments are collected through a Northern Cyprus bank and a local virtual POS. For e-commerce businesses, the UK or Dubai is therefore often more suitable. You can examine the three countries together in the country comparison and assess your own situation with the suitability test.
Formation steps and price items are explained on the company formation page for Northern Cyprus, account opening and collection channels on the Northern Cyprus bank account page, and annual obligations on the Northern Cyprus accounting page.
How does living in Cyprus compare with Dubai and the UK?
The first thing that sets Northern Cyprus apart from Dubai and the UK is language and currency: daily life in Northern Cyprus is conducted in Turkish, and the currency is the Turkish lira, while the dirham is used in Dubai and pounds sterling in the UK. On the other hand, a Northern Cyprus company has no access to international payment providers; for businesses that sell online abroad, this difference is decisive.
Daily life and costs in the other two countries are dealt with in the same order: the guide to living in Dubai and the guide to living in the UK. If tax will be decisive in your decision, our article on countries with no income tax may also be useful.
What should you check before moving to Cyprus?
Settling the following points before deciding to live in Cyprus helps to reduce unforeseen costs in the first months:
- In which currency will your income and your rent be? If the two differ, exchange rate movements are reflected directly in your budget.
- If you will work, has your employer obtained the preliminary permit? The preliminary permit is obtained before coming to Northern Cyprus.
- Does the rental contract state the currency, the number of months requested in advance and the deposit?
- Will you drive? Traffic drives on the left and public transport is limited.
- If you will form a company, where are your customers, and through which channel will payment be collected?
