Tax in Northern Cyprus is applied under two separate regimes: local companies operating in the Northern Cyprus domestic market, and companies formed in the Free Port and Zone. Most of what is listed under the heading "benefits of forming a company in Cyprus" belongs to the second group and depends on a condition. This article deals with both regimes, using the rates in force as of 9 October 2026. Information on daily life and costs in Cyprus is set out in our article on living in Northern Cyprus.

What are the tax rates in Northern Cyprus in 2026?

A local limited company in Northern Cyprus pays 10 per cent corporate tax on its income. If the remaining profit is distributed to shareholders, 15 per cent income tax is charged on it. The general VAT rate in Northern Cyprus is 16 per cent, and income tax is progressive, between 10 and 37 per cent. The table below sets out the rates together, and each is explained in the sections that follow.

Corporate tax is based on Corporate Tax Law No. 41/1976, and the income tax on profit distribution on Income Tax Law No. 24/1982. The income tax brackets and VAT rates are taken from the 2026 texts of the Northern Cyprus Income and Tax Department.

How is the total tax burden of a local company in Northern Cyprus calculated?

Suppose a local company in Northern Cyprus earns a profit of 100 units. First 10 per cent corporate tax is calculated, leaving 90 units. Fifteen per cent of these 90 units, that is 13.5 units, is charged as income tax on profit distribution. A total of 23.5 units of tax is thus paid, and 76.5 units remain for the shareholder. The statement "tax in Northern Cyprus is 10 per cent" is therefore incomplete: if the profit is distributed, the total burden is 23.5 per cent.

In Northern Cyprus, the profit of a local company is subject first to corporate tax and, if distributed, to income tax on distribution.

What are the income tax brackets in Northern Cyprus in 2026?

Income tax in Northern Cyprus is progressive and has five brackets. According to the 2026 table of the Northern Cyprus Income and Tax Department, the annual personal allowance is TL 655,000. Tax is applied to the base remaining after allowances at the rates below.

Northern Cyprus income tax brackets · 2026, annual tax base

Next TL 45,00020%
Next TL 120,00025%
Next TL 190,00030%
Above TL 400,00037%

In salary calculations, these amounts are divided by the number of salary payments in the year. Spouse and child allowances are granted separately.

What allowances apply to income tax in Northern Cyprus?

When income tax is calculated in Northern Cyprus, allowances are first deducted from the tax base. In the 2026 table, the personal allowance is TL 655,000, and the allowance for a spouse living with the taxpayer is TL 52,400. The child allowance varies between TL 39,300 and TL 72,050 according to the child's age and education. Employees also benefit from a special allowance of 10 per cent of their net earnings.

These rates apply to people who are resident in Northern Cyprus and earn their income there. Information on countries that do not apply income tax is set out in our article on countries with no income tax; Northern Cyprus is not among them.

What are the VAT rates in Northern Cyprus?

VAT in Northern Cyprus is applied at five rates: 0, 5, 10, 16 and 20 per cent. The general rate is 16 per cent; every good and service not listed in a special schedule is subject to this rate. The 0 per cent schedule includes basic foodstuffs such as milk, wheat flour and bread, meat and pulses, and the machinery and equipment of investments tied to an incentive certificate. The 20 per cent schedule includes items such as tobacco, alcoholic drinks, cosmetics and passenger cars.

VAT rates in Northern Cyprus are set by the Council of Ministers by regulation, and the schedules change often: the regulation in force was amended more than twenty times in 2026 alone. Before the rate applicable to a product is settled, the current text of the regulation needs to be reviewed.

How does tax work for a Northern Cyprus Free Port company?

The Northern Cyprus Free Port and Zone is a separate area treated as lying outside the customs line. Under the rules published by the Free Port and Zone Directorate, the income that a company formed here earns from its activity in the Free Port is exempt from income and corporate tax. Transfer of profit is free and is not taxed in Northern Cyprus.

What is the condition for the Northern Cyprus Free Port exemption?

The condition for the exemption is the direction of the activity. Goods and services sold to the Northern Cyprus domestic market fall outside the exemption; customs duty, VAT and income tax apply to these sales in full. Two different customers of the same company lead to two different tax outcomes:

Northern Cyprus Free Port company: tax by customer location
Where is the customer?Corporate and income taxVAT
Outside Northern CyprusNoneNone
Another company inside the Free PortNoneNone
A local company in Northern CyprusGeneral rulesApplied

The annual activity fee is not a tax; it is a fixed amount paid every year.

How do customs and VAT work in the Northern Cyprus Free Port?

Transit goods and services sent from the Northern Cyprus Free Port abroad are exempt from customs duty and other indirect taxes. If goods enter the Northern Cyprus domestic market from the Free Port, customs duty and VAT are paid in full. For businesses that trade in goods and plan to sell into the European Union, an EORI number also becomes relevant; this is a registration that EU customs looks for, and a Northern Cyprus company is not treated as registered in the EU.

What are the benefits of forming a company in Cyprus?

The benefits of forming a company in Cyprus, for businesses whose customers are outside Northern Cyprus and which form a Free Port company, are as follows:

  • Tax: no corporate or income tax is charged on activity directed outside Northern Cyprus and inside the Free Port, and the company is not a VAT taxpayer.
  • Turkish lira and foreign currency accounts: a corporate account at a Northern Cyprus bank is opened in Turkish lira and in foreign currency; Turkish lira payments from Turkey can be accepted.
  • Free transfer: holding foreign currency and transferring funds abroad is free in Northern Cyprus.

Northern Cyprus is particularly suitable for businesses that provide services abroad, engage in transit trade, or need a Turkish lira account. Which activity is suitable under which condition is explained in detail on the Northern Cyprus tax page.

What are the limits of forming a company in Northern Cyprus?

The drawbacks of forming a company in Northern Cyprus mostly arise in the areas of collecting payment and recognition. The following points need to be considered before a decision:

  • Stripe, PayPal, Payoneer, Shopify Payments, Amazon and Etsy do not open accounts in the name of Northern Cyprus companies. Card payments are collected through a local virtual POS, and other payments by bank transfer.
  • Northern Cyprus is not a member of the European Union and is not the same country as the south of the island. A Northern Cyprus company cannot be used on platforms and in contracts that require a company registered in the EU.
  • A Free Port company is formed with at least two shareholders; it cannot be formed with a single shareholder.
  • Travel to Northern Cyprus once is required for the signature and the bank account.
  • Even where no tax arises, accounting is mandatory: the company submits its balance sheet and annual reports every year.

For e-commerce businesses that sell through Amazon, Etsy or Stripe, the UK or Dubai is therefore generally more suitable. The differences between the three countries are presented together in the country comparison. The types of activity set up in Dubai are covered in our article on business ideas in Dubai.

Is capital blocked in Northern Cyprus?

Anyone who is not a Northern Cyprus citizen counts as a foreign shareholder. In a Free Port company, the portion of the capital corresponding to the foreign shareholder's share is blocked at a bank in Northern Cyprus during registration. This amount is not paid to any authority: once the bank is approached with the company's registration documents, the block is lifted and the amount can be used in the company account. The capital amount varies with the shareholding structure; the current figure is on the Northern Cyprus page.

If you live outside Northern Cyprus, where does tax arise on a Northern Cyprus company?

As long as the profit of a Northern Cyprus Free Port company stays in the company and is used for its activity, no tax arises in Northern Cyprus. For a shareholder who is tax resident elsewhere, tax typically becomes relevant when the profit is distributed to them as a dividend: how a dividend from a foreign company is taxed, and whether any relief applies, is determined by the rules of the country in which the shareholder is resident, not by Northern Cyprus.

The second matter is the place of management. A company whose activities are in practice carried on and managed from the shareholder's country of residence may be treated as a corporate taxpayer there. Whether a double tax agreement applies depends on the country of residence. These points vary from person to person; before formation, you should consult your own tax adviser in your country of residence.

How is a Free Port company formed in Northern Cyprus?

The formation of a Free Port company in Northern Cyprus is subject to two approvals: first the Free Port administration, then the Council of Ministers. In formations carried out by Ortac Global, the steps and typical durations are as follows:

  1. Company name: two or three alternatives are determined and the availability of the name is checked. Typical duration is 3 working days.
  2. Documents and signature: the formation documents are prepared; you need to travel to Northern Cyprus to sign. Typical duration is 3 working days.
  3. Capital account: on the day of signature, the company's capital account is opened at the bank.
  4. Free Port approval: the application is assessed and forwarded to the Council of Ministers. Typical duration is 10 working days.
  5. Council of Ministers approval and registration: typical duration is 14 working days.
  6. The registration documents are issued and the bank account is opened for use.

The durations add up to at least 30 working days and may extend to 40 working days depending on the calendars of the approving authorities. The decision on opening the bank account rests with the bank concerned, following its own review.

What obligations apply to a Northern Cyprus company after formation?

Even though a Northern Cyprus Free Port company pays no tax, it is obliged to keep records and file returns. Every year the company submits its balance sheet and annual reports to the authorities concerned, and it also pays the annual activity fee. If the company is to be closed, all balance sheets and reports must first have been submitted before a voluntary liquidation.

In accounting terms, the company can be in one of two states. A company with an open bank account and trading activity is treated as active, and its records are kept every month. A company with no bank account and no trading transactions in the period is treated as dormant; the annual accounts of a dormant company are also prepared and its returns filed. Details are on the Northern Cyprus accounting page.

Formation steps and documents are explained on the company formation page for Northern Cyprus, account opening and available collection channels on the Northern Cyprus bank account page, and annual obligations on the Northern Cyprus accounting page.
